A resident of Westbrook, Maine, John White Stuart, III, PhD, chaired the English Department of the regional high school in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, until his retirement in 2009. Previous publications have included two brief biographies of notable Virginians and a series of online essays for the Hawthorne in Salem website. The Extraordinary Life of William Alexander Stuart: From Antebellum to Late Victorian Virginia, 1826-1892, which tells the story of his great-great-grandfather, is his first book.
